Although the history of Cornwall is entwined with the First Nations Peoples and the English Loyalist families, it also has a predominantly Francophone presence. The first influx of these people occurred in the late 1800’s as industries started to spring up in the city.

History of Cornwall 1
The aboriginal peoples of Ontario called the area around what is now Cornwall, Ontario home for millions of years. The first occurrence of non-native settlement in this area was when the Loyalists were expelled from the US during and after the American Revolution. They were soon joined by returning Loyalist soldiers and others, primarily from the state of New York so that there was an entrenched settlement in Cornwall by 1786.
